It was a late evening when Julian Pearlman (Balcony Bridge Lead Singer), Sean Moran (Balcony Bridge Lead Guitarist) and RDI0 (North Node Noise Producer) had just taken their normal respective seats in the living room of the house venue now known as Chateau Phinney. RDI0 was laying out on the coach, Julian was in the large recliner and Sean was on the futon checking out his Marshall amplifier. It was after a long day of performing. Jack Moran (Balcony Bridge Drummer) had just left to home and Jacob Longhurst (Balcony Bridge Bassist) was upstairs jamming with Charlie.
“The Studio isn’t always a good vibe, RDI0. It feels fake sometimes,” emphasized Julian talking with his hands almost more than his voice. Julian Continued, “Why can’t we do a Tiny Desk kind of thing?” RDI0 sighed. He is quite a bit older than Julian and Sean so the long day seems to have worn him considerably more. “It’s a little more complicated. You guys are a full rock band. With a full drum kit, and everything”, RDI0 explained. Sean interjected, “Well, how does KEXP do it?” RDI0 sat up. “You bring up a good point, but you guys play everywhere. You play in parks and parking lots, and all kinds of crazy places.” RDI0 tried to plead the technical challenges. “We just want to do KEXP Sessions in the park,” Sean said very matter-of-fact. “Yeah, KEXP in the park”, Julian exclaimed, again mostly with his hands. “I will have to put some thought into this.”
And with that, the North Node Noise mobile recording studio was born. RDI0 went through iterations. Trying different equipment at different shows. Experimenting with different setups that took varying stages of setup and configuration.
Now comprised of custom batters, cable snakes, at least five flight cases and an ocean of storage devices, microphones, and DI boxes, the mobile recording studio is not just a reality, but central to the North Node Noise offering.
RDI0 has commented on the North Node Noise’s mobile recording capability, “You know, you spend years developing techniques and experience as engineer and producer, but it is really just gasoline waiting for a spark, a vision, to make an explosion. This is why I am grateful to work with Balcony Bridge. It is was really their vision of not just bringing music to the people but making recording even more accessible that put this whole thing in action.”
The Mobile Recording Studio has now been used countless time by North Node Noise. In the Live Music Video for Balcony Bridge’s song Always, you can see elements of the Studio. That song was recorded live in Gas Works park overlooking the SkyLine of Seattle:
